At three months old, Bonnie developed a dangerously high fever and was completely blue, not breathing, and limp when her mother found her. Her mother ran to a doctor's house across the street who revived her through mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The doctor later told the mother "if there ever was a miracle, this is it. We had a dead baby, but she is ok now." This experience was not revealed to Bonnie until she was 42 years old.
From ages 4-9, Bonnie had a recurring nightly "dream" that she later recognized as memories of her infant NDE. The experience began with blackness that felt like liquid mercury, then a tiny speck of golden yellow light that grew and engulfed her, thrusting her forward. She found herself hovering over her house's rooftop with 360-degree vision, seeing weather-beaten shingles and thinking her father needed to replace them. She saw the entire neighborhood in extraordinary Technicolor - lush green lawns, maple trees with rainbow-colored autumn leaves, and the entire valley including landmarks like Main Street, church steeples, schools, and factories. Most strikingly, she saw "the flats" - a ten-acre parcel of black soil from an old Indian Reservation. The experience provided answers to questions that puzzled her for years - how could she have known what her neighborhood looked like from above, having never been more than inches off the ground as an infant? The colors were liquid-like in their purity and brightness, as if music might flow from them. She felt complete harmony, unity, belonging, and love rising from the ground itself.
