Bob C, age 19, was on a scuba diving trip after staying up late drinking with little sleep. Despite warnings about cold water in May, he chose not to wear a wetsuit. During his first dive in 30 feet of water, having eaten no food and with his body burning calories to stay warm, he fainted underwater. His dive partner was unable to help as Bob panicked briefly upon realizing his predicament. He made the conscious decision to swallow water quickly to "get dying over with." He remained unconscious for two days before awakening in Methodist Hospital's ICU.
During his NDE, Bob found himself walking on solid ground in a very bright, cloudy atmosphere, feeling compelled to go to one particular point. He briefly thought of loved ones but knew they would be okay. At an open doorway in a light-colored wall about 20 inches deep, he saw three ladies in long white robes with "Mona Lisa smiles." One lady was forward of the other two. Without words being spoken, he had the distinct impression they knew him. While in the doorway, he looked left and saw another doorway, suddenly feeling that "beyond that door is the answer to all questions." As he started to enter, the first woman communicated that although this was the right place, it wasn't his time yet. Despite overwhelming sadness at this message, he resigned himself to their wisdom and made a conscious decision to turn away. He describes never experiencing such bright, clean light or feeling so much love.
