Alfonso nearly drowned in rough seas at a Rio de Janeiro beach during a company training course. Dragged out to sea, he struggled desperately while praying to his late parents for help, swallowing water but curiously never feeling the sensation of drowning. Suddenly everything became still, as if someone turned off a switch. Before him appeared a light or horizontal line, perfectly straight and infinitely extended - it was literally EVERYTHING and simultaneously NOTHING. Nothing else existed - no universe, world, time, space, or other beings. He experienced the most crushing feeling of absolute Nothingness, unable to turn or look elsewhere as his body didn't exist. He felt overwhelming disappointment, fully conscious and thinking "What happened? I've been cheated. What was the purpose of life? Where are my parents? Where is the tunnel? Where is God?" The experience was one of complete meaninglessness and eternal emptiness. When rescuers began touching him, the light changed from blood-red to orange, and he heard voices calling his name in Portuguese before being pulled back. He spent four days hospitalized and developed a lasting phobia of open spaces and blank walls that recreate the crushing nothingness feeling.
