Weston G nearly drowned in June 1962 when the Elkhorn River overflowed during a late spring thaw. He went down the river in a rowboat with a friend and two older brothers, wearing no life vests. The river current forced the boat into a tree limb that threw Weston to the rear of the boat, which then tipped and took on water. He panicked, jumped from the sinking boat, and went underwater three times, staying submerged for approximately twelve minutes.
While underwater, Weston initially saw many dazzling colors and then angels and darkness. The darkness was very scary and seemed to last forever. He then found himself in a dark, square tunnel and began seeing a dim light at the end that grew brighter as he traveled closer. The light became the most brilliant white imaginable and began taking the form of Jesus. Though he doesn't remember if words were exchanged, he felt urged to stay with Jesus and wanted to remain. However, Jesus sent him back. His next memory was his head bouncing off a tree limb before a hand came down underwater, took his submerged arm, and lifted him onto a stable tree trunk. He was saved by his friend's older brother. Weston saw dazzling colors, angels, and a square dark tunnel with progressively brightening light that formed into Jesus. The vision of Jesus as brilliant white light was the primary veridical element of his experience. Before this experience, Weston had never been inside a church and only knew Jesus through pictures. The experience profoundly affected him - he now attends church regularly and believes in God, though he notes his attendance isn't solely because of the NDE.
