Walter was struck by lightning in November 1990 while lying immobile in the rain on a lawn. He felt no cold or pain and found himself circling above his body, observing himself inert below. He realized he was outside his body and experienced the wonderful sensation of not needing to breathe or feel cold. While moving in this state, he passed through the walls of his house 100 meters away and heard his wife speaking quietly with her mother in the kitchen, though they couldn't see or hear him.
He experienced a complete life review from two months before birth through death, including forgotten memories, sensations, and his desire for fruit in the womb. Time seemed not to exist in this spiritual dimension. He saw a tunnel of indescribably intense light where he became "a drop of light in an ocean of light" and his mind disappeared. When his son Luca's name came to him, he returned to his body on the ground with terrible pain. The description of becoming one with light and mind disappearing has New Age overtones of consciousness merging rather than maintaining individual identity before God.
