Thomas and his friend G, both intoxicated, purchased and injected heroin in Hartford. Thomas immediately fell head-first down two flights of stairs and stopped breathing. G placed him in bed and left for an indeterminate period. Upon returning, G found Thomas not breathing and revived him through slapping and dragging him upright. During the respiratory arrest, Thomas viewed his seemingly dead body from above near the ceiling. His primary concern was not for himself but for his parents, who would be devastated and embarrassed by newspaper reports of their son's death from overdose with no prior drug use history. He felt deep sorrow for them but no self-concern before being revived.
