Thomas was assaulted with a three-foot club, suffering a depressed skull fracture requiring three operations over the following year. After being struck on the left skull, he experienced a tremendous roar like being inside a church bell, followed by attempted speech that wouldn't come out. His body felt as if lifting to the sky, requiring his friend to hold him down. From approximately 30 feet above, he observed a crowd of people on the opposite side of the street from where he fell, watching someone holding up a person sitting on the ground - not recognizing this was himself. He witnessed the ambulance journey from an external perspective. Upon awakening, he found himself covered in vomit with people trying to keep him conscious. His sporadic memory included a humorous emergency room encounter with "Dr. Dick" before transfer to a trauma center. The experience left him knowing there is life after death.
