On February 26, 2002, Jean S experienced a heart attack while in the recovery room following gall bladder surgery. He remained half-conscious and made a breathtaking dive into a tunnel where he saw motionless people. He saw deceased colleagues who had died years ago making gestures inviting him to come along. He also saw his parents (deceased since 1979) making similar inviting gestures. His mother-in-law, however, made signs trying to stop him from following the others. He continued diving faster and deeper toward a bluish-white light that was attracting him. At one point he thought he was flying and looked down to see a bed with a form connected to various medical devices, surrounded by people in green with yellow faces. He heard voices and wanted to answer but no sound would come from his mouth. The dive continued toward the light. Eventually he saw his family - his wife, two daughters and their husbands, with his two-year-old granddaughter in the middle surrounded by soft light, shaking her head saying "No Grandfather." After this, everything dissolved into the light and he returned. He experienced fear of dying during the experience.
