Shawn J had been hospitalized for a month with a mysterious illness that left him paralyzed from head to toe, unable to eat or drink. In August 1974, his condition deteriorated to the point where a Catholic priest administered Last Rites. Despite the priest's encouragement, Shawn welcomed death as release from unbearable pain. A sense of serenity engulfed him as he began floating through the universe, gently guided by a being to his left. Stars appeared as they would in countryside without city lights.
He traveled for an unmeasurable time toward a distant light that became more brilliant as he approached. The light was unlike anything he had ever seen - eventually he was completely engulfed by it and became one with it. He experienced complete peace and love beyond human language's ability to describe. Within the light was such perfection that he wanted to stay for eternity, convinced he was given a glimpse of God's nature. A voice inside his head told him he must return because it wasn't his time and he had something still to do on Earth. He was then pulled back into his body and awoke on the operating table.
