Seven-year-old Roy was diagnosed with Spinal/Bulbar Polio and transferred to a specialized clinic. Unable to swallow and becoming unconscious, he underwent emergency tracheotomy surgery. During the procedure, he found himself near the ceiling in what looked like a hospital hallway, observing the doctor and two nurses working furiously over his body on a bed slanted with his head lower than feet. He felt no fear, just waited peacefully. The scene was vivid - doctor bent over his left shoulder, nurses on his right, the bed near a hallway corner. He wore his arrival clothes on an uncovered body. He regained consciousness days later in an iron lung. The memory remains extraordinarily vivid decades later.
