RoseMarie had myasthenia gravis causing severe breathing difficulty. During a crisis triggered by smoke from a controlled burn, she stopped breathing completely at night. She was wide awake and aware she wasn't breathing, feeling like cement was on her chest. She understood she was leaving her body and perceived a place of division - like a surface underwater - where on one side she was alive and breathing, on the other side she was not. She moved backward from this division surface, slowly at first then gaining speed. Her thoughts moved like lightning with crystal clarity, understanding everything with no fear. When she tried to breathe and got some air, the backward movement slowed. She made a conscious decision it was too hard and stopped breathing, causing rapid backward movement. Realizing she wouldn't make it back, she started breathing with effort and the movement slowed. She was hospitalized and told she was trying to die. The experience gave her certainty that there is no fear in death.
