Ruud fell 10 meters from a rooftop while working as a plumber, landing in hot tar that spilled over him. At the first-aid station, he had his first out-of-body experience, seeing himself on the table and hearing doctors' nervous yelling. He observed them wrapping him incorrectly and an assistant from a burn hospital getting angry and correcting them. He observed a nurse taking surgery assistance courses and knew exactly which medications each patient received and when. When he told the nurse about her studies and progress, she was incredulous and avoided him afterward. He had no further OBEs after recovery.
