Patricia arrived at the emergency room with an intense headache from a hypertensive crisis caused by contraindicated medication interaction (MAO inhibitor with sinus medication and brandy, then given Demerol which could cause death). Everything went black and she heard someone yell for Atropine. She found herself hovering at ceiling height, looking down at her body in a blue and white hospital gown with one leg folded under the other, drenched in cold sweat. She experienced heightened awareness, euphoria, and security like a child in a parent's embrace, with a sense of understanding everything about the universe. She sensed she could go no further than the ceiling. The experience completely eliminated her lifelong history of depression, anxiety, and being homebound from fear. She feels fortunate to know that consciousness continues after the body stops.
