In May 1981, Fredna was sitting on a low water crossing with friends when flood waters suddenly rushed toward her, flipping her off the bridge into drainage pipes under the road. The pipes were clogged with debris, trapping her underwater. After initial panic, extraordinary peace and calm overcame her. She experienced standing on top of the bridge looking down through the road at her body flopping in the water below. She could see through her eyes at herself drowning and remembered thinking "well this is it!" without fear, only calm acceptance. The flood pressure eventually burst through the debris, shooting her out the other side where a friend pulled her from the river.
