Norton was hit by a car on September 24, 1982. He recalls bystanders laying coats on him for warmth before losing consciousness. In the ambulance, he asked the paramedic to hold his hand, feeling alone in pitch black darkness though his eyes were open.
During the experience, Norton's awareness became "natural, yet totally non-human." Nothing from the experience fits human imagination - he only has translations his mind can cope with. He recognized his Great-Uncle Frank, an ex-miner with strong spiritual faith and fierce compassion. Frank communicated that Norton had to go back because he had "a job to do." Norton was grief-stricken but knew this was purely truth and accepted it. Norton next recalls calmly opening his eyes in a plain white hospital room, seeing double doors far away. When a nurse entered, he simply asked where he was, then slipped back into unconsciousness. He experienced what looked like a computer's "Flying Through The Stars" screensaver that he long thought was the road as he fell, but now believes differently. Since then, Norton feels he has been on a "great mission" though he cannot have meaningful partnerships - relationships seem like training to become a better person. He makes a difference in people's lives just by being around, currently volunteering at a college radio station. Despite medical depression since 1997, he strives to become wiser, gentler, kinder, and stronger. The loneliness is profound - he wants someone to hold him while he releases emotions.
