Pat returned home from shopping and suddenly experienced severe crushing chest pain. Recognizing something was seriously wrong as he began sweating profusely, he called 911. He fought to stay awake while talking to the dispatcher, repeatedly saying "please hurry." The aid car arrived in about 5 minutes though it seemed much longer.
When medics loaded him onto a gurney, one asked if they could cut off his shirt. Pat wondered why they wanted to do that, then suddenly found himself looking down at himself watching the medic cut open his shirt. He wondered "How am I seeing this?" and realized something was really wrong. This out-of-body observation occurred during what was described as clinical death from the heart attack. The next thing Pat remembered was being rolled into the emergency room. Following the experience, he was hospitalized and required three units of blood transfusion. Initially misdiagnosed with "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome," he was later diagnosed with colon cancer requiring hemicolectomy surgery. He recovered fully and remained cancer-free. The experience eliminated Pat's fear of death. He survived the heart attack and was able to quit smoking. While brief, the OBE during clinical death was vivid and meaningful enough to create lasting change in his perspective on mortality. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience during clinical death aligns with biblical accounts of the spirit separating from the body. The observation from above reflects consciousness surviving bodily crisis. The elimination of death fear suggests genuine spiritual encounter. The life-saving nature of the experience leading to cancer diagnosis could be seen as divine intervention. Unbiblical elements: None identified. This straightforward OBE during cardiac arrest contains no problematic theological elements.
