Paquita was working alone in a hotel annex, vigorously vacuuming when she banged her elbow hard against an open door and lost consciousness. She awakened on a bed with her boss, a doctor, and coworker present, having urinated on herself. The doctor said she had passed out.
During her unconscious state, Paquita found herself in Manhattan at water level, with skyscrapers in front of her. She experienced a wonderful sensation of being able to go instantaneously wherever she wanted at will. Initially she felt she had only a head without a body and wasn't wet despite the water setting. Later she understood she had neither head nor body, only consciousness. The experience brought serenity approaching happiness, incredible peace and pleasantness, and a sense of unity with the world. She felt she suddenly understood everything about the universe. The experience was so tremendous and wonderful that she kept it secret for ten years, feeling it was like a treasure that would lose its enchantment if shared. Paquita reports possible development of a sixth sense afterward, though she was young and uncertain if she had it before. While the memory has become hazy over time and fear of death has returned somewhat, she maintained for years that she wasn't afraid of death because of this experience.
