Melanie was hospitalized with undiagnosed meningococcal septicemia in 1997. After a day of sedation and testing, her vital signs crashed around 8pm - heart rate and blood pressure so low her heart barely pumped blood. She left her body and found herself near the window without physical form. She observed medical staff working on her body while experiencing profound peace and freedom from pain. She could see glowing halos around trees and heard murmuring thoughts from a passing plane. She heard nurses say "no pulse, no heartbeat, need to call her husband." After contemplating staying in this peaceful state, she decided to return for her husband and son. Upon making this decision, she immediately returned to her body as staff prepared defibrillator paddles.
