Matthew fell 67 feet from a tree while tying a rope for a swing in 1999, suffering three hairline skull fractures and a broken cheekbone. Upon falling, he felt a warm sensation like being wrapped in a blanket. He observed himself from above, seeing his body lying on the ground with his younger brother sitting beside him. He experienced enhanced senses including vivid summer smells and zoom-like vision. He heard a waterfall sound despite none being present. The experience brought profound peace, freedom, and understanding of the universe. He awoke in hospital hours later. Matthew notes he had attempted suicide three weeks prior and was stillborn for 18 seconds at birth.
