Mark G's father, at age 22, was working with lumber when his arm was severely cut, likely severing a major artery with gushing blood. At the hospital with his wife and parents present, he suddenly found himself at the top corner of the room looking down at himself as doctors and nurses worked on him. He could see his wife and parents crying and upset. He tried telling them he was okay and present. He then moved to "some place" he described as beautiful that felt like home, with a group of people waiting for him. He said "I knew them. I don't know how I knew them, but I did." He was told it wasn't his time and had to go back, though he didn't want to. He woke up in the hospital and was told he probably shouldn't have made it and had died on the table. After this experience, he became an alcoholic, feeling life was too painful and wanting to be "back there." He later developed lung cancer, quit drinking, became more spiritual, and when his son Eric was dying of AIDS, shared his experience to help him pass peacefully.
