In June 1966, Marlene K took a lethal dose of Phenobarbital in a suicide attempt while staying at her in-laws' house in Amarillo, Texas, facing an unwanted divorce. She fell asleep reading her ex-husband's grandmother's Bible. Her next memory was hovering above her head in an ambulance, watching two male attendants work on her body, wondering why she couldn't hear the siren. She turned 180 degrees and saw her ex-husband's grandmother (who had died three months earlier) standing in a long white gown, appearing young in her twenties or thirties, holding beautiful daffodils. The grandmother communicated that if Marlene took the bouquet, she could leave with her. The daffodils reminded Marlene of her own grandmother. She had to choose whether to accept the flowers and go with the deceased grandmother or return to her body. She apparently chose to return and woke up in a hospital room five days later.
