On June 28, 1999, Marla W experienced a severe car accident when a tanker truck slid sideways and rolled over her vehicle, splitting open and covering her and her husband with fuel. She sustained a severe head injury and serious laceration to her left arm. Her husband thought she had bled to death. During the incident, Marla found herself in a white, peaceful, fog-like environment where she felt enveloped and began gliding away from her body. She could hear mumbling voices around her but couldn't make out what they were saying. When she became frustrated and moved back toward the loudest voice, the fog became gray and muddy in color. She then felt tremendous pain and was jolted back into blackness. She woke up 18 hours later in the hospital, having been described as dazed and confused during periods of consciousness. It took three weeks to regain memory and three months for most memories to return, though four years of memory remain lost.
