Maria S, age 32, was at the hospital for delivery on June 21, 2007, when she experienced amniotic fluid embolism - a rare pregnancy complication occurring in 1 in 22,000 deliveries with only 5% survival rate. After receiving epidural medication, she began seizing and fainted. Her heart and lungs failed, the baby had to be pulled out not breathing, and she experienced massive bleeding requiring emergency surgery. She received 29 units of blood transfusion and spent four days in intensive care. Maria was reportedly the first known survivor of this condition in El Paso.
During her medical crisis, Maria found herself in a brilliant bluish/whitish light, walking toward her deceased grandmother (died 2004) and aunt (died 1994). They were standing before her wearing gowns that appeared to be the color of light itself. Both smiled gently at her as she walked toward them. There was no tunnel - she was simply in the light with no visible end behind them. As she approached them feeling peaceful and happy, the names of her two children, Julian and Paola, came to mind. Upon thinking of them, something dark pulled her away from her relatives and back to life. She reported feeling as if she had gone on vacation to another world, experiencing incredible peace, joy, and a sense of unity with the universe. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: Maria's experience contains classic biblical NDE elements including encountering deceased loved ones in a realm of brilliant divine light, consistent with descriptions of heaven or paradise. Her being drawn back when thinking of her children suggests divine consideration of her earthly responsibilities. The experience strengthened her already moderate Catholic faith to conservative/fundamentalist levels, and she now prays more carefully, believing God answers prayers in unexpected ways. Unbiblical elements: None identified. The experience contains no elements contradicting biblical teaching such as reincarnation, universal salvation, or occult practices. Her encounter was purely with deceased Christian relatives in a light-filled realm consistent with biblical paradise.
