During childbirth in May 1971, Mari L experienced cardiac arrest and clinical death. Her heart stopped and she left her body through her head, experiencing no pain during the separation. She found herself unable to breathe and desperately wanted to return to her newborn daughter. Despite multiple attempts to re-enter her body, she was drawn away by a force "not of this world" and felt locked out. She cried out to God, promising to do things she hadn't done, trying repeatedly to return. Suddenly, God allowed her return - she was drawn back through her heart rather than her head. She had to help her heart breathe and held onto her attachment to her daughter. Upon return, she saw light and heard noise on her right side when God let her come back to life.
Mari reported having out-of-body vision that was dramatically different from normal - she could see everything around her in a wide way, noting that physical eyes are very limited compared to this expanded perception. Her hearing was also altered, describing everything as "closed" with a different quality of sound, and communication occurred through thoughts rather than spoken words. Time seemed to stop during the experience. She felt incredible peace and joy, along with a sense of unity with the universe and understanding everything about it.
