Don was lying on a bed in the emergency room talking to two nurses when he paused, closed his eyes, and experienced a near-fatal heart attack. His NDE began immediately as he lost consciousness. Upon opening his eyes in the spiritual realm, Don found himself standing before a half-glass door with crinkle-like glass that let light through but prevented seeing through it. A brilliant light shone beyond the door, and he stood with his left arm extended upward to push it open.
He could feel the warmth of the light and was strongly drawn to it. Recognizing that if he went through the door he would not want to return, Don made the conscious decision to drop his arm and take one large step back. From this new position, he observed that the door was not attached to any wall but hung in a freestanding frame with light all around it. The light then took shape like smoke or cloud and came around and over the door toward him, wrapping itself around him. As the light enveloped him, Don felt a tingling sensation all over and heard or received the words "All things of the Earth will pass away." He experienced indescribable love and peace, feeling as if the light was lifting him. After closing his eyes momentarily to bathe in this love and peace, he opened them again to find himself back in the emergency room looking at his wife and two nurses.
