Kevin M experienced a life-threatening medical crisis on April 8, 2006, when high blood pressure caused a blood vessel to burst in his nose. After hours of unsuccessful attempts to stop the bleeding, his wife took him to the hospital where he went into shock while waiting for treatment. The triage nurse measured his blood pressure at approximately 170/120. When a doctor came to take him to an examination room, his legs gave out and he had to be carried. While nurses continually asked if he was still with them (which he thought absurd as he felt present), he suddenly found himself walking through a grassy field with warm sun on his face and fall-colored trees in the distance. The thigh-high grass was easy to walk through, and he felt absolute happiness and peacefulness. He sensed someone waiting for him just over the rise. He then found himself back in the exam room with doctors holding his legs over his head saying "He's back. We've got him." He felt disappointed and almost angry to be back, having been gone only a few seconds. The experience left him with incredibly vivid senses, a feeling of unity with the world, and no fear of death, leading him to pursue adventurous activities like skydiving and race car driving.
