During fourteen hours of hard labor with no progress and fetal distress, Kathy was rushed for emergency cesarean section on April 14, 1982. While being prepped, her blood pressure dropped to 62/48 and she went into shock. The blood pressure alarm was the last thing she heard before shooting out of herself. From the ceiling, she watched with intense curiosity as medical staff worked on her body below. A bright silvery white light appeared to her left. She moved by thought to look each person in the eye, though they couldn't see her. She watched the doctor's concern to deliver the baby while another group worked on her. Looking at her sad nurse, she was suddenly slammed back into her body with tremendous force, feeling all the pain and pressure. She heard "We have her back" before going under anesthesia. In recovery, she told the nurse about her observations, but it frightened her and she never saw that nurse again. The doctor ignored her attempts to discuss it. During the experience, colors were more vivid, sound was melodic, and she felt only curiosity without fear. Before returning, she heard/felt "Not yet" and knew she had unfinished work. She found returning more frightening than leaving. The experience changed her from religious to spiritual but not following organized religion.
