During lung surgery in November 1992, Katie remained conscious despite anesthesia and observed her operation from an out-of-body perspective. She watched the monitors as blood pressure dropped rapidly, heard a nurse say "My God, we're losing BP," and observed the heart monitor flat-line. From a ceiling perspective, she watched the medical team's efforts to revive her while another group delivered her baby via emergency cesarean. She moved face-to-face with the doctor and observed each person in the room, including her sad-looking nurse. Her experience included floating through a tube or narrow passageway into bright white light. She experienced a complete life review, reliving experiences from different perspectives and understanding others' thoughts and feelings. She felt warm, peaceful happiness and wanted to continue floating away but suddenly knew she had to return for her daughter and unfinished work. Upon being "slammed back" into her body with tremendous force, she heard "We have her back." When she tried to discuss her observations with the nurse and doctor, the nurse became frightened and the doctor ignored her.
