Karina M, a Type 1 diabetic, accidentally took a double dose of insulin in 1984 by using the wrong gauge syringe. She went into insulin shock with convulsions, eyes rolled back, and then became limp. During the experience, she found herself in a hard-to-describe void where she could "see" but saw no light or deceased people. She received a wordless understanding that if she died, her 8-month-old son and parents would be okay in the long run. She felt certainty that her world would continue without her, her son would grow up healthy (he did), and her parents would survive their grief. She accepted dying and felt a weight lift. Upon returning after her ex-husband administered sugar, she experienced a strong sucking pull back to her body. Everything moved in incredibly slow motion - she could hear her husband yelling her name from very far away and saw his hand moving slowly across her face (slapping to wake her) but felt no touch. She experienced incredible peace, loss of fear of death, and elation. A loud prolonged pitch was heard until reaching acceptance. She believes she returned for her husband, who lost a son to a drunk driver and feared death, and that her experience would help him face his terminal cancer diagnosis.
