Jonathan R underwent emergency surgery on July 16, 2003, for a perforated esophagus that had torn while choking on food. The doctor found air, spit, and food sitting on his heart with the chest cavity miraculously uninfected. He was given less than 1% chance of surviving the operation and less than 40% chance of living past one year.
During surgery under general anesthesia, Jonathan stood about ten feet up and to the side of his body on the table. A person stood next to him whom he didn't look at. He observed at least a dozen nurses and doctors around the table, but most significantly saw white angelic beings guiding the hands of each staff member in everything they did - from walking to using surgical tools in his chest cavity. The angels were actively directing every movement. The experience was peacefully quiet with no sounds. The surgeon reported it was the best operation he had ever performed with no problems. Jonathan was released after only 14 days despite having his chest opened, lungs deflated, and esophagus patched. He became bolder in sharing his Christian faith afterward.
