Jose M served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam from April 1969 to May 1970. On May 21, 1969, his unit attacked a well-fortified enemy position on a hill next to a rice paddy. Before the night assault, Jose felt intense fear knowing he might be killed. As they charged the hill, a mortar exploded behind him, throwing him through the air.
His first response was to pray for forgiveness. Suddenly, he could see himself lying on the ground from above. All fear vanished, replaced by complete peace. He remained in this out-of-body state throughout the night as combat continued around his body. When someone finally touched him to evacuate him, he immediately returned to his body. He states he wished he had never come back. The experience permanently eliminated his fear of death.
