John H was critically ill with nuchal rigidity, pyrexic 109F fever, and abdominal rigidity. During laparoscopic surgery, his appendix was removed (acute focal resolving appendicitis) and his spleen and liver were found greatly enlarged. Three days post-surgery, he threw a fat embolus and arrested. He ran PO2 of 24 and PCO2 of 86 for over a week. During the arrest, he watched himself from the ceiling as they moved him from his room to the elevator, up to surgery for a tracheotomy, and back to his room where he was hooked up to a Bennett respirator. He remained on the breathing machine for three weeks and did not regain awareness until April. The experience included incredible alertness, time distortion, vivid senses, past life review, future visions, encounters with mystical beings, divine light, universal understanding, and reaching a barrier he could not cross. Biopsy revealed Gaucher's disease.
