John M was performing equipment maintenance with TSgt Will G when he made a dangerous shortcut by disconnecting a cable without first disconnecting power. The cable had a broken shield, causing 440 AC to jump through his right hand, across his chest, and out his left hand. He was electrocuted for nearly thirty seconds according to Will. During the electrocution, John experienced an out-of-body perspective from about eight feet away and four to six feet above, seeing himself being electrocuted and Will breaking down equipment twenty feet away. He felt anger and embarrassment at his mistake rather than peace. Will noticed the problem, shouted, raced back to pull the power, and John collapsed. Will carried him topside, called an ambulance, and performed CPR for twenty to thirty minutes. Medical technicians found his sinus rhythm 180 degrees out of sync and used defibrillation. He was stabilized and admitted to the base hospital. The experience felt like twenty minutes but Will confirmed it was only seconds.
