John C was undergoing what was supposed to be a "simple knee surgery" on October 28, 1981. While in recovery, he opened his eyes and realized he was not breathing. His doctor was leaning over him yelling, "Breathe, damn it, breathe!" Unable to breathe, John began losing consciousness and blacked out. He later learned from his doctor that he had experienced heart and respiratory failure.
During his NDE, John instantaneously rose above his body with his back to the light, feeling profound peace. He heard the code blue being called and watched as the medical team tried to resuscitate him. He describes being in what he calls a "fourth dimension" where he could see his hands and feet, and everything was perfect. Though not audible, he heard a voice say, "It is not your time yet my son. You must go back. I have things for you to do." Despite wanting to stay in that peaceful state, John was suddenly "sucked back" into his body, awakening as the doctor pounded on his chest. The experience was characterized by pure love and an overwhelming sense of peace. John notes that this event led him to become an ordained minister, and he subsequently laid hands on many people for healing, with more being healed than not. John had two additional out-of-body experiences in July of the same year he submitted his account, though these were not exactly the same as his NDE.
