Eight-year-old Jessica B spent seven days in a coma suffering from encephalitis (brain swelling) in 1983. During her coma, she experienced an NDE that began with traveling through a tunnel of bright, soft white light that was calm and serene - a type of serenity she has never experienced again. At the end of the tunnel, she met her brother who had died five years before her birth. He wore jeans and a red sweatshirt and explained who he was. Jessica was thrilled, having asked for a brother since age three without knowing she actually had one who had died.
They sat together using white garden furniture in a plain yet beautiful all-white place she believes was a first level of heaven. They talked, and Jessica asked if God existed, to which her brother confirmed He did. She was given a profound choice: to visit for six hours or stay forever. Despite the wonderful serenity and finally meeting the brother she had always wanted, she thought of her mother and became scared she would never see her again. Though tempted to stay, she said "Mommy needs me" and chose to return. Her brother asked her to promise to name her first-born son after him, which she agreed to and later fulfilled with her second child. When she asked if she would see him again, he said yes and told her to be a good little girl. Upon regaining consciousness, she had lost her memory except for this experience and suffered temporal lobe brain damage.
