Joe W shares his childhood NDE through a poem titled "The Golden Light." As a young boy, he became severely ill with a raging fever that wouldn't respond to medication. His exhausted mother fell asleep holding him, and when she awoke to silence, she feared he was dying. The doctor examined him and found him in a deep coma, telling the mother to take him home and wait, saying if there was no change by morning, he would arrange for a funeral. In desperation, the mother heard an inner voice telling her to take her son to "Nona" the Indian healer in the hills.
During his comatose state, Joe experienced a golden light that he describes as beautiful and like eternity. The light surrounded him with awesome love and carried him up high with magnificence all around. He was not afraid to die. From this elevated perspective, he looked down and saw the women (his mother and Nona) putting oil all over his body and wrapping him in heavy cloth to keep him warm. The Light of Love then told him to "Go back now" and "When it's time I'll call you home." Though he didn't want to leave the light, the choice was divine. The light promised "I will follow you and will never leave your mind." His mother's prayers were answered when he recovered.
