Jennifer was in her backyard with her dog on August 20, 2006, when a 200-year-old live oak tree began to fall. Despite attempting to run to safety while carrying her dog, she was struck by a 65-foot limb approximately six feet from safety. She suffered internal injuries, bleeding, and superficial lacerations requiring emergency surgery.
At the moment of impact, Jennifer experienced being surrounded by bright light with yellow and red edges. She immediately felt the presence of her deceased grandparents and believed they moved her to avoid direct impact, saving her life. During this state, she thought "Wow, there really is a white light" and "This isn't how I'm supposed to die - I've got too many things to do." Time seemed to stop while her mind raced with incredible speed. She experienced the tree's fall in freeze-frame segments while maintaining rapid thought. After the tree fell, she experienced profound awareness - noticing crickets, piercing silence, the sky above, and contemplating what she would leave behind if dying. Her husband found her trapped, and remarkably, her dog emerged unharmed. In the ambulance and hospital, she had additional experiences, including deliberately looking at herself in mirrors before surgery as if saying goodbye.
