Janice H had a severe case of flu in February 1970 while attending college in Oklahoma City. Her parents drove two hours from Grandfield to get her and her two-year-old son. During the ride home, she became unconscious and delirious. A physician was called to the home and witnessed her condition. In her NDE, she found herself in the backyard of her grandparents' home, which appeared the same yet somehow different from her childhood memories. She encountered her grandmother (who had died when Janice was nine from sudden cardiac arrest) standing on the other side of a fence in the neighbor's yard. They communicated through thought rather than words. Her grandmother expressed pride in her, apologized for leaving when she did, and praised how Janice had acted responsibly when finding her body. When Janice wanted to cross the fence to go with her, her grandmother said it wasn't her time, that she still had things to accomplish. She told Janice she would always be with her and close by. Her grandmother touched her cheek before sending her back. Janice awakened to find her parents and physician standing by the bed, who said they thought she had died but could hear her calling to her grandmother.
