Bernice experienced clinical death during a CAT scan due to an allergic reaction. She felt tightness in breathing and began to gasp, observing technicians through a window talking in another room. After the choking became painful and then stopped hurting, she looked down and saw her body convulsing with people rushing toward it. From a ceiling perspective, she watched as a tube was inserted down someone's throat, initially thinking "that looks like it really hurts" before realizing the person was herself. She observed the doctors talking and saw defibrillation paddles approaching her body, becoming scared when she recognized herself. She then returned to her body on the table, feeling the choking sensation from the intubation tube. Following this experience, she developed psychic abilities, experiencing visions of major disasters like plane crashes, train wrecks, and earthquakes at least 24 hours in advance, which she finds both meaningful and burdensome as she cannot help the people involved.
