In October 1995, Bob was returning from a yacht race when a strong gust caused the boom to swing and strike the back of his head, cutting it wide open and nearly shattering his skull. He lost consciousness immediately. During his NDE, Bob found himself hovering in the air above old Holland, admiring beautiful geometric gardens, light blue water, and large pink windmills. Colors appeared as vivid soft pastels. He experienced perfect hearing despite being slightly deaf normally.
Most remarkably, during the experience his identity completely changed - he believed his name was Hans (with a Germanic surname he couldn't recall) and had no memory of being Bob. He felt tremendous peace and the sense of finally coming home. When crew members called "Bob, come back," he wondered who Bob was, insisting he was Hans. He felt irritated at being pulled away from this beautiful place. An emergency room doctor who was part of the crew saved his life with a well-stocked first aid kit. Bob fluctuated between realities, bouncing between his normal identity and Hans's world. He describes the NDE reality as more real than ordinary reality.
