During a routine dental cleaning, the patient requested nitrous oxide for anxiety relief, having used it successfully years earlier for wisdom teeth extraction. Initially comfortable and aware of surroundings including conversation, music, and dental tools, they suddenly felt being pulled quickly and heard a click followed by absolute silence and the darkest void imaginable - described as devoid of color, completely blank. Realizing their body was gone with no breath or feeling, unable to access it, their thoughts raced with the recognition of death and urgent need to return before it was too late. An echoing voice, sounding like their own but younger, screamed frantically "Hurry! Hurry! And tell her no more gas. You won't make it next time." Panic ensued as the voice continued echoing loudly until surrounded by grey light, speeding rapidly back and crashing into their body with a violent gasp that caused them to leap up in the chair. The hygienist noted their eyes opened wider than humanly possible. When asked if she had increased the gas (she hadn't), the experiencer realized something profound had occurred beyond normal nitrous effects. The return brought lasting changes: awareness of the body as merely a costume, feeling like a spirit using a body for growth, continued hearing of the echoing voice trying to communicate, and profound spiritual transformation. As a Christian who believed in readiness for death expecting Jesus and heaven, this experience of dark anxiety and isolation shattered previous beliefs about the afterlife, leaving them terrified of death and questioning their faith, goodness, and understanding of salvation.
