This experience contains numerous elements that conflict with biblical teaching, despite including some compatible aspects. The positive elements include the overwhelming love, life review showing the impact of actions on others (similar to biblical judgment), and the transformative effects leading to greater mindfulness. The experience of consciousness beyond the body and encounters with spiritual beings align with biblical concepts of the soul and spiritual realm.
However, the experience fundamentally contradicts biblical theology in several crucial ways. The concept of pre-existence where souls choose their parents before birth directly contradicts biblical teaching that God creates each soul at conception. The option to "start over in another lifetime" explicitly embraces reincarnation, which the Bible rejects in favor of "it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). The framework of multiple lifetimes and choosing one's circumstances contradicts biblical teachings about God's sovereignty in creation and life circumstances. While the experience contains genuine spiritual elements and transformative effects, its cosmology is fundamentally incompatible with biblical Christianity, aligning more with Eastern religious and New Age philosophies.
A 7-year-old child living in suburban Chicago experienced severe asthma attack requiring hospitalization. After unsuccessful treatment with inhaler and prednisone, they were given medication causing anesthesia-like sensations. Despite nurses wanting them to stay awake, they drifted off and stopped breathing altogether. They met others in a dark void, all trying to understand their situation. A distant light appeared and they became part of it while wanting to bring others along. The experience included overwhelming love and complete acceptance, with presence of other beings communicating in a strange language. A comprehensive life review showed moments from multiple perspectives simultaneously - their own and everyone affected by their actions. This proved deeply humbling. Meeting a feminine guide/counselor figure, they had to decide whether to continue this life or start over in another. They were warned this life would be very lonely and might not reach full potential. They were shown future decision points, their career, living location, and various challenges. They remember choosing their parents before birth from what looked like Seattle's Space Needle, selecting them for their kindness. Despite the guide suggesting starting over would be better, attachment to family led them to continue this life. They were shown a future scene with a blonde woman on a plane with sunrise above clouds, feeling "it was all worth it." Upon return, they were intubated and unable to communicate telepathically with the nurse. The experience left them more serious and mindful, noticed by a friend years later. Thirty years passed before meeting someone who embraced their story. They maintain hope for the future while attending IANDS meetings. |
