This experience shows limited biblical compatibility despite containing some spiritually significant elements. The positive aspects include the transformative nature of the encounter leading to greater compassion and service to others, which aligns with biblical fruits of the Spirit. The vast field and beings of light could potentially represent paradise or the spiritual realm described in scripture. The presence of loved ones in the afterlife has some biblical precedent, though the Bible is generally silent on the state of consciousness of the deceased before the resurrection.
However, several elements raise serious biblical concerns. The development of medium abilities directly contradicts biblical prohibitions against consulting with spirits of the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Leviticus 19:31). The absence of God, Jesus, or any divine authority figure is notable—the experience centers on human spirits rather than the divine. The claim to have developed healing powers and intuitive abilities suggests New Age practices rather than biblical spiritual gifts, which are given by the Holy Spirit for the church's edification. The title "death doula" implies ongoing communication with the deceased, which scripture forbids. While the predictive element about the granddaughter could be seen as prophecy, the overall context of mediumship and spirit communication places this experience in conflict with biblical Christianity's clear boundaries regarding contact with the dead.
Gail was in an IBM sales class when she experienced sudden heart failure. She heard a distinct "click," her heart stopped, and she collapsed. Having had previous NDEs as a young child, she had resolved to pay attention if it happened again. She was transported to the hospital in a white van rather than waiting for an ambulance, accompanied by two men (one tall, one short). Doctors later told her it took 14 minutes to resuscitate her. After leaving the hospital against medical advice, she drove to Tennessee and learned her grandmother had suffered a stroke and was hospitalized.
During her clinical death, Gail traveled to another place that initially felt like a doctor's office with soft light and many seats, then transformed into a meeting place with slightly brighter but still gentle light. Very tall white double-doors appeared to her left that opened without her touching them. She walked into a vast, endless field where beings made of energy rather than physical form were blending into the light. Though she knew these were individuals she had known, she couldn't identify them at that moment, feeling completely comfortable and surrounded by pure love. One energy drew close and she recognized it as her grandmother, which confused her since she knew her grandmother was still alive. They talked for a long time about many things, with her grandmother eventually telling her she had to return to life. Her grandmother showed her a vision of her granddaughter who wouldn't be born for another five years. She then heard another "click" and was suddenly back in her body in the emergency room with someone rubbing her chest bone and others using electric paddles. The verification of this experience came when Gail discovered her grandmother had indeed suffered a stroke at the time of her NDE. Her grandmother's presence during the NDE while simultaneously having a medical crisis provides unusual corroboration. Additionally, the vision of her future granddaughter was fulfilled five years later. There was no tunnel, no bright light in the traditional sense, and no deity figure in her experience. |
