However, serious concerns arise from his speculation about "soul exchange" with his deceased cousin killed in WW2. Gerald experienced an NDE at age 2 in the summer of 1944 while at a beach with his father. He was sitting on his father's shoulders, yelling "NO" because he didn't want to go into the deep water. He remembers his father falling and hitting the water, after which Gerald began drowning face-down in the water.
During the experience, Gerald found himself inside a golden bubble observing a child's body floating face down in the water. At the time, he didn't know who the child was - to him it was just a lifeless body floating. This peaceful scene dissolved when he felt hands grabbing his body and pulling him out of the water. He then found himself over his father's shoulder as his father bounced him up and down. The experience involved a complete loss of body awareness while in the bubble, with no sensation of time. He perceived the scene not in normal three-dimensional vision but in a different way while in the bubble. There was complete silence during the experience, and he felt incredible peace and a sense of unity with the world. The observation was characterized by a detached, observational quality where he couldn't even recognize that the drowning boy was himself. Back on the beach, his father put him on a blanket with his two sisters helping to keep him calm, then they resumed playing, leaving him by himself. The experience has remained vivid in his memory for over 75 years. Gerald wonders whether it might have been a soul exchange with a cousin he was named after who was killed in World War 2 earlier that year, viewing it definitively as an NDE where he observed "two me" - himself in the bubble and in the water. |
