Val's experience contains some biblical elements including encountering overwhelming divine love identified as God, leaving the body, and experiencing transformative effects that led to forgiveness and unconditional love toward her abuser. The practical application of loving enemies and finding good in others aligns with biblical teaching. Her understanding that lack of love causes human problems resonates with biblical truth about love's centrality.
However, numerous problematic elements make this largely incompatible with biblical faith. She explicitly prayed for death through reincarnation after reading Shirley MacLaine's New Age book. She experienced chakra activation (Hindu/New Age concept) and encountered what she describes as an alien being, which she speculates appeared this way due to her expectations from the book. Her expansion to universal consciousness where she "became one with everything" reflects pantheistic rather than biblical theology. The absence of Christ, any biblical imagery, or Christian framework is notable. While the emphasis on unconditional love is positive, the overall framework is distinctly New Age rather than biblical, mixing various spiritual traditions in ways incompatible with biblical Christianity.
At age 16, Val had been severely depressed due to extreme abuse from her father who had threatened to kill her. After praying fervently for death through reincarnation to another life, she experienced a sudden, explosive headache in the back of her head that felt like her head would explode from pressure. Her neurologist later said this sounded like a burst brain aneurysm. She felt chakra-like energy points activate up her body from groin to head, especially strong at her throat, though she had no knowledge of chakras at the time.
When the energy reached the top of her head, the pain vanished and she left her body floating upward into an utterly black void. Initially confused about the nothingness, she thought "surely there is something here?" and immediately saw geometric shapes floating toward her on a grid. When she thought "Where is God?" her consciousness expanded to encompass the entire universe. She was filled with overwhelming unconditional love that she knew was God - a love unlike anything on Earth, pure bliss. She became one with everything in existence, filled with all knowledge, understanding the connection to all things including trees, rocks, and animals. Val then found herself in a light-filled cave where she hid behind a wall, observing what appeared to be a grey alien with large black eyes. The alien's body was made of beautiful moving light in colors that don't exist on Earth, like an aurora borealis. Though she knew she wasn't supposed to be there, the alien telepathically asked if she would come out. She was mesmerized by the alien's beauty and kept trying to look at it rather than the flat-screen TV showing her life scenes. When she realized her death would cancel the school musical where she had the lead role with no understudy, she flew backward at high speed back into her body. The experience transformed Val completely. She learned to love her abusive father unconditionally, recognizing his violence came from feeling unloved. By projecting love and finding the good in him (his gardening), she stopped his abuse. She developed methods to love life despite difficulties, using humor and childlike play to overcome depression. The experience taught her that unconditional love is the answer to the world's problems. |
