Past life memories, pre-ordained life view, soul destination based on deeds
Todd's experience contains significant biblical elements including a clear judgment scenario with doors/gateways determining eternal destination, which aligns with biblical teaching about judgment after death. The concept of these scanners reading one's deeds and being unable to fool them resonates with biblical ideas about God's omniscience and the books of life being opened. The throne-like chair could represent divine authority, and the transformative effects leading him to share that death shouldn't be feared could be seen as positive witness.
However, deeply problematic elements overshadow the biblical aspects. Todd claims to have downloaded an entire past life as an insurance investigator in Cleveland, explicitly embracing reincarnation which directly contradicts biblical teaching about "once to die, then judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). His belief that life is completely pre-ordained eliminates free will and moral responsibility. The suggestion that both doors lead somewhere acceptable ("your hell could be Hitler's heaven") promotes relativism incompatible with biblical absolute truth. His view that a deity doesn't watch us daily but we judge ourselves contradicts God's active involvement and ultimate authority as judge. These elements place the experience firmly outside biblical orthodoxy despite some surface similarities.
Todd has experienced two NDEs. His first was brief, lasting only about 3 minutes, featuring the typical bright light and peaceful feeling. His second NDE six years later was far more profound - he was clinically dead for at least 30 minutes from a heart attack. Medical staff didn't expect his mind to survive, yet he returned mentally intact. The nurses were discussing their disbelief that he could be alive given his extremely low body temperature and extended time without life signs.
During his extended death, Todd found himself sitting on a huge throne-like chair in a room with tan walls and floor. There were two arched doorways without doors that he perceived as scanners that would read one's life and soul to determine where they belonged after death. He believed these doorways showed one's deeds on earth through a mechanism impossible to fool since "you can't fool yourself." He spent what felt like 5 minutes there, sensing that souls don't reach this place until the body has been gone for an extended time. A Chinese woman with a baby appeared and asked what they were supposed to do. Todd told her they had to pick a door. When she asked which one to choose, he deliberately told her the door he thought was wrong, intending to go through that door himself so she wouldn't have to. She went through the other door and disappeared. Before Todd could choose his door, he was slammed back into his body 10 miles away from where he died. He heard nurses arguing about whether he could actually be alive given his condition. Todd also experienced a download of an entire previous life as an insurance investigator in Cleveland who lived for 35 years. He now feels almost a hundred years old with these additional memories. He believes he was kept alive through numerous near-death situations throughout his life specifically to experience death, remember it, and return to share that death is nothing to fear. He was unconscious for 14 days after returning but retained vivid memories of the experience. |
