This experience diverges significantly from biblical accounts of the afterlife. The experiencer describes being surrounded by darkness rather than light, feeling like a single atom of energy connected to all other atoms in a universal oneness. There were no encounters with God, Jesus, angels, or deceased loved ones. No heaven, hell, or judgment was experienced. Instead, the experience was characterized by a sense of peaceful non-existence and unity with the universe. The experiencer explicitly states that the experience caused them to stop believing in God and the Bible, instead believing in a form of existence after death as energy or oneness with the universe. Elaine was 21 weeks pregnant when gestational diabetes caused her to pass out while driving at 55 mph, resulting in a head-on collision with a delivery truck. She remembers briefly coming to in the car, thinking she was napping, then everything went dark as she flatlined. The experience left her feeling that existence continues after death in a form of oneness with the universe, though she no longer believes in God or the Bible as she was raised to believe.
