This experience presents significant challenges from a biblical perspective. While the out-of-body experience supports the dualist view that consciousness can exist separate from the body, the overall tone is troubling. The experience of total darkness and void contradicts biblical descriptions of the afterlife for both believers (light, peace, divine presence) and unbelievers (conscious torment, not annihilation). The sense of "going from something to nothing" directly opposes biblical teaching about eternal consciousness after death. The experiencer's atheistic worldview both before and after the NDE, combined with the void experience, suggests no divine encounter occurred. The violent circumstances (recreational choking game) leading to the NDE also raise concerns, as this was not a natural medical crisis but dangerous behavior. The lasting fascination with death without spiritual awakening, continued atheism, and subsequent drug use and mental health struggles indicate no positive spiritual transformation. From a biblical standpoint, this experience might represent a demonic deception or simply brain chemistry during oxygen deprivation rather than a genuine glimpse of the afterlife.
In Spring 2005, Ryan was in school when a friend demonstrated the "pass out game" by choking him until his vision went black. Despite trying to stop, his friend continued strangling him against the wall. Ryan fell forward, struck his head on a urinal, and began having a grand mal seizure. During this event, his vision faded to blackness and he felt himself swirling and rising in the dark void. Looking down, he saw a strange writhing object that "looked wrong" - it was his own body dying and seizing, appearing to do rapid sit-ups without regard for safety. He flew down toward his body and entered it, then snapped awake jumping to his feet like a bewildered wild animal. He experienced profound dissociation, staring at himself in the mirror with blood-red eyes, unsure what he was looking at. The experience left him with a fascination with death and the sense of floating through total darkness with only his dying body visible. He never received medical treatment despite severe head injuries. The void experience felt consistent with his atheist beliefs, though the OBE did not.
