While this experience contains some elements that could be interpreted biblically, such as the brilliant light and overwhelming peace, the experiencer's agnostic interpretation and conclusions diverge significantly from biblical teaching. The light could correspond to descriptions of God's glory, and the perfect peace might reflect the "peace that passes understanding" mentioned in Philippians 4:7. However, the experiencer explicitly remains agnostic and considers the experience might be merely a chemical reaction rather than divine. He makes no mention of God, judgment, or spiritual beings. Most problematically, his conclusion that death brings peace regardless of one's spiritual state or relationship with God contradicts biblical teaching about judgment and the afterlife. Scripture teaches that peace in death comes only through salvation in Christ, not as a universal experience. The experiencer's view that everyone will "rest in peace" regardless of their beliefs directly opposes biblical doctrine about eternal destinies.
Miguel P was surfing on a winter day in 1994 when enormous waves were breaking. While attempting to navigate a massive wave, he hesitated about whether to go through, over, or under it. The wave broke before he decided, throwing him from its crest and crushing him beneath. His surfboard leash broke and he became disoriented underwater, unable to tell up from down in the darkness. As he began drowning and breathing in water, the experience transformed completely. The darkness became crystalline clear water, and he felt profound peace and serenity beyond anything he had experienced before or since. He saw intense white light as if from a hot summer day and felt himself floating in a perfectly calm ocean. The feeling was pure well-being and immense emotion beyond compare. He lost consciousness in this state and later awoke on the shore, where his fiancée, sister and friends said he had been underwater for about five minutes. The experience eliminated his fear of death and gave him certainty that death brings a state of perfect peace. He remains agnostic about whether the experience was divine or a natural chemical reaction, but is certain it represents what "rest in peace" truly means.
