This experience presents a complex intersection of Christian faith and esoteric mysticism that diverges significantly from biblical orthodoxy. While the experiencer identifies as Catholic, his deep involvement with the Rosicrucian Order AMORC, an esoteric organization teaching hermetic wisdom and mystical practices, introduces non-biblical elements that color both the experience and its interpretation. The NDE itself was remarkably minimal - a brief out-of-body observation of his wife with no encounter with divine beings, no life review, and no otherworldly realms. This simplicity contrasts sharply with his post-NDE claims of daily communication with deceased individuals including Edgar Cayce, receiving channeled instructions for scientific discoveries, and being directed to join the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Cayce's organization promoting psychic development and reincarnation.
The most concerning elements from a biblical perspective are the post-NDE developments rather than the experience itself. The claim of ongoing communication with the dead directly violates biblical prohibitions against necromancy and spiritism found in Deuteronomy 18:10-12 and Leviticus 19:31. While he mentions communication with Jesus and Mary, the context of also channeling Edgar Cayce and receiving "instructions from past masters" aligns more with occult mediumship than biblical prayer. The Rosicrucian influence is evident in his interpretation of the experience as validation of consciousness continuity, a concept that in Rosicrucian teaching includes reincarnation and soul evolution through multiple lives. His statement about having "connections in high places" and joking about the deceased suggests a view of the afterlife more aligned with spiritualist beliefs than biblical teaching about the resurrection and final judgment. Though the experience strengthened his belief in God and reduced his fear of death, the syncretic blend of Christianity with Rosicrucianism and psychic channeling represents a significant departure from biblical Christianity.
Zak, a long-time member of the Rosicrucian Order AMORC who had attained higher degrees, experienced clinical death in November 2010 while hospitalized for uncontrollably high blood pressure and a kidney tubule blockage. Following a stroke in June 2010 that left him wheelchair-bound with left-side paralysis, he was scheduled for surgery to remove the kidney blockage. On the morning before surgery, around 7 AM, his wife took him to the bathroom where the experience occurred. He found himself hovering above his body, observing his wife running around frantically while wondering why she was so distressed. This out-of-body state lasted for what the hospital later confirmed was 2 minutes of clinical death.
During the experience, his consciousness remained at normal levels of alertness, with his thoughts moving incredibly fast while maintaining vivid sensory awareness. His primary focus throughout was on his wife, whom he describes as his twin soul whom he loves dearly. Unlike many NDEs, he did not encounter a tunnel, brilliant light, other beings, or otherworldly realms. He experienced no particular emotions beyond concern for his wife, no sense of peace or joy, and received no special knowledge or life review. The experience was neither pleasant nor distressing, simply a neutral observation of the scene below. The next awareness he had was waking up in his hospital bed. Hospital authorities later informed him he had been clinically dead for 2 minutes. Remarkably, when taken to surgery the following day as scheduled, doctors discovered the kidney blockage had completely disappeared, eliminating the need for the procedure. The surgeon also discovered he had two kidney tubules on each side, leaving him curious whether this occurred during the NDE or existed previously. For Zak, this experience served as profound validation of his existing beliefs about the continuity of consciousness, which he had studied through both his Catholic faith and Rosicrucian teachings. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his conviction that earthly life is meaningful. Following the NDE, he began receiving what he describes as instructions for future scientific discoveries and daily communication with past masters including Jesus, Mother Mary, and Edgar Cayce, who directed him to join the Association for Research and Enlightenment. |
